Even though the University Centre of the Westfjords has its main focus on coastal studies (coastal management and community development), several student-lead research projects centre around forests in Iceland. A summary of the projects will be presented in this session. In addition, two current students will present their ideas for their final projects. One has its focus on rewilding, re-peopling and afforestation in the frame of community forestry, transferring best practices from Scotland and Canada to the Icelandic context. The other thesis idea is an exploratory study looking into unassisted seedling recruitment from conifer trees in the forest patches of Isafjordur, Iceland. The last part of the session will be about an international research project that the University Centre is part of: Climate Change Resilience in Small Communities in the Nordic Countries.
